UAL FINE ART UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI SHOW 2022

ANGLO INDIAN SPECULATIONS

In this iteration of my ongoing body of work exploring the Anglo Indian community, I directed my gaze towards ‘Operation Legacy’. This is the codename for the objective to destroy documents which detailed british  actvity in colonial India. When returning home during partition, documents were burnt en mass or thrown into the sea with the intention of erasing history.

For my work, I made liquid light prints of my great grandparents on muslin cloth and submerged them in a tall tank to deterioate over the course of the exhibition. I took the very slow natural process of a fading image and catlysed it, finding a parallel to colonial amnesia in Britain through the dissolution of the archive and lack of education in English schools.

The accompaning sound piece follows a fictional correspondence between myself and a scientist who is studying processes of memory. The conversation flits between the biological and the social, the sterile and the familial leading to speculations rather than conclusions.
